Southwest part 1: Bryce Canyon and Zion

May 2013 found us on the road through American Southwest and to the Pacific Coast in California:

I will be adding links to other parts, once the posts are up.

The first leg of our journey took us to South Utah: Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park (red on the map above)

The fiery geological structures of Bryce Canyon are called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks.

Going down inside to the terraces in between arches and turrets:

Hoodoos

And more hoodoos

Rock surface looks like ancient pottery (on the left) and Thor's Hammer (on the right)

From fiery-orange sedimentary rocks of Bryce canyon the road through green pastries with mountain views...

...takes us to Martian landscapes of tan-colored sandstone of Zion NP

Waterfalls of the Emerald Pools

The Virgin river nearing the Narrows...

We were badly prepared, ended up in the Narrows at the second half of the day, so we didn't go very far. It's on the bucket list now.

The rocks are inviting to climb and some dudes were rappelling in the Narrows

We'll be back...
