January 2013. After coming back from the road
trip to Florida we flew to the conference in San Diego. We were there
only for a couple of days, and did some sightseeing in the city and
around the bay. The place struck me as the one full of contrasts.
There is, of course, downtown filled with concrete, glass and palms...
... with busy city life
Next to the downtown is the industrial port and military naval base
The city of San Diego sits on the busy San Diego bay where the passing military ships...
...share the space with small keel-boats, billionaire’s yachts and adorable seals (seals will be further)
Short bus trip through arched Coronado bridge...
... can take you to sandy beaches of Coronado island, on the other side of the bay from the naval base.
You can walk in green parks (Coronado bridge can be seen at the background)...
...and enjoy the mountain view
All this is crowned by unbelievable sunsets over the ocean

More adventures in San Diego: [I will add links once the posts are up]
- HMS Surprise (Her Majesty's Ship) - replica of HMS Rose, a 20 gun sixth-rate frigate built in 1757, then used as HMS Surprise in the Peter Weir's movie "Master and Commander", based on Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian
- USS Midway, former aircraft carrier, now a museum (with some glimpse on the Naval base, as seen from the bay cruise ship)
- San Diego Zoo, one of the largest zoo's in the world, that pioneered the concept of open-air, cageless exhibits that re-create natural animal habitats
